When I began making Art Dolls in 1996, I fell in love with developing their characters and the allure of working with texture. What I did not fall in love with was their fragility and stiffness. In 1997 my first child was born and I feared I would have to forgo my love of sculpting for the practicality of being a mom. I envisioned breakage everywhere. So when two of my pieces suffered a shipping mishap going to a juried show, I decided that there had to be another way. Lampshire Flexible Figures and Extreme Doll Making was born.
Sculpey Superflex and / or hand-dyed wool over flexible armature is the basis for my work. All stitches are double threaded, all details are secure, even if it means using epoxy putty! They are, however, made as non toxic as possible, for my own protection and yours.
I chose to call my class EXTREME DOLLMAKING, because this form of doll making is just that - Extremely Unbreakable, Extremely Posable, Extremely Standable, Extremely Sandable, Extremely Paintable, Extremely Lovable. Extreme Doll Making is a four part class in which you will learn the basics of sculpting a doll unlike many others- a one-of-a-kind sculpted figure not locked into a pose, freestanding, with inset eyes and needle- rooted hair! Compared to other doll making methods, Extreme Doll Making is extremely fast. Once you learn it, you will want to continue producing wonderful characters that will be around as keepsakes. Extreme Dolls are easy to ship, making them perfect gifts.
With Extreme Doll Making 2 Needle - Felting, Extreme Doll Making meets felting for bears and animals unlike your standard sewn pieces. These too are Extremely Posable, Extremely Standable, Extremely Lovable, with inset eyes and hand painted features.
Look for Extreme Doll Making Advanced, to be released soon, that will take Doll Making far beyond expectation - with my newest discovery - articulated hands and feet! It will also feature realistic acrylic eyes, open mouths (including teeth), two types of bodies (sculpted and fabric) 4 choices of wigging, and even clothing patterns!
Extreme Doll Making is not a pattern class, it is a step-by-step instructive tutorial that will have you thinking out of the box from now on. Right now, could your pieces be used for stop-motion animation? Do you suck in your breath when anyone makes a sudden movement toward your dolls? Or are you looking to begin making dolls and want to start with something that is not difficult but is innovative?
